Ambition, Vision, and Vigor

The Cuypershuis tells the story of architect and designer Pierre Cuypers (1827–1921), highlighting his ambition, vision, and vigor. The Cuypershuis is the place where he lived and worked. From here, he built an extensive oeuvre that took shape in his atelier.

The architect is mainly known as the designer of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam Central Station, Castle De Haar in Haarzuilens, and the restoration of the Ridderzaal in The Hague.

The presentation at the Cuypershuis allows you to discover how Cuypers, with his personality, ambition, and modern entrepreneurial spirit, managed to secure and execute these major projects. The activity within the unique building is tangible and palpable, making a visit to the Cuypershuis an unforgettable and inspiring experience.

Design

The Amsterdam-based agency Bureau Caspar Conijn was commissioned to redesign the presentation of the Cuypershuis. The agency has created exhibitions for institutions including the Hermitage Amsterdam and Saint Petersburg, the Frans Hals Museum, the National Education Museum, and Museum Prinsenhof in Delft.

To create the ‘historical sensation’ in the new presentation, historical images, letters, and quotes have been used to enhance the atmosphere, combined with the museum’s collection. Each room has been given its own theme and ambiance. An introductory film, listening points, and interactive elements provide a multifaceted experience in the museum. Thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign, the ceiling of the Cuypers family’s former living room has also been restored to its full glory.
