The renowned marine painter Hendrik Willem Mesdag and his wife Sientje were art collectors who had their own museum. Their collection of 19th century art can still be visited.

The Mesdags began collecting paintings they admired in 1866, and over their lives they amassed a truly exceptional collection. The main focus is on the Barbizon school and The Hague School. The museum houses the largest Barbizon collection outside of France. Hendrik Willem Mesdag collected applied arts to decorate his house and museum. He acquired many ceramic pieces by Theodoor Colenbrander, as well as Japanese vases and other exotic objects.
