Een selectie van meer dan veertig vogels, van sierbeeldje tot sierlijke vaas, is nu te zien in Volière – Vogels in Keramiek.
Volière
Het huizen van siervogels nam in de 19de eeuw een vlucht en stond symbool voor welvaart, macht en reislust. Volières (grote kooien) rezen in de tuinen van rijke burgers en werden gevuld met kleurrijke, exotische vogels. Dit was een bron van artistieke inspiratie voor plateelkunstenaars. De vitrines van het Gouds Plateel op de bovenste verdieping staan nu in het teken van dit thema.
Gouds Plateel
De expositie is onderdeel van de grote collectie sieraardewerk die het stadsmuseum rijk is, het zogenaamde Gouds plateel. Vooral in het art-nouveau tijdperk waren vogels een geliefd onderwerp. De dieren hadden een speciaal plekje in het creatieve arsenaal van onder andere Leen Muller en Francien Sanderus. De nodige siervogels zijn dan ook terug te zien op de werken in het Gouds Plateel.
