Pass through the gate of Loevestein Castle and travel centuries back in time. At the museum, learn about Hugo Grotius, the Middle Ages and the Hollandic Water Line. You’ll be given a key to discover everything on your own.

Hugo Grotius

Loevestein Castle has over 650 years of history. The most notable period was undoubtedly when it served as a state prison. The most famous inmate was the law professor Hugo Grotius. He has the most famous prison escape in Dutch history to his name: he escaped Loevestein Castle by hiding in a book chest. A stay at the castle is appreciated more these days. Some people even stay overnight in the luxurious Bed & Breakfast.

Thanks to its central location, Loevestein Castle is easy to reach from all corners of the Netherlands. The Castle is only a 20-minute drive from the A2 highway at Zaltbommel and the A27 highway at Gorinchem.
