Hugo Grotius
Loevestein Castle has over 650 years of history. The most notable period was undoubtedly when it served as a state prison. The most famous inmate was the law professor Hugo Grotius. He has the most famous prison escape in Dutch history to his name: he escaped Loevestein Castle by hiding in a book chest. A stay at the castle is appreciated more these days. Some people even stay overnight in the luxurious Bed & Breakfast.

Thanks to its central location, Loevestein Castle is easy to reach from all corners of the Netherlands. The Castle is only a 20-minute drive from the A2 highway at Zaltbommel and the A27 highway at Gorinchem.
