Museum of Wonder
Teylers Museum is the Museum of Wonder. Since it opened in 1784, Teylers Museum has been a place to marvel at centuries-old fossils, beautiful stones, ingenious devices, precious books, fascinating coins and medals, fabulous drawings and romantic paintings.
Oldest museum
Teylers Museum is the oldest museum in the Netherlands, and the world’s most authentic 18th-century museum. The interior alone, with its highlight the historic Oval Room, is a sight to behold. It’s as if time has stood still.
Art & science
The modern wing houses frequently changing temporary exhibitions. The topics range between arts and science. The old laboratory of the Nobel laureate Lorentz was opened in 2017. Inside, follow in the footsteps of Einstein and Lorentz and marvel at the Teyler Museum’s highlight, the large electrostatic generator, in action. No visit to the museum is complete without a visit to the beautifully restored Pieter Teyler House, the former residence of the museum’s founder Pieter Teyler.
