The Willet-Holthuysen House

The Willet-Holthuysen House used to be the home of Mrs. Willet. She bequeathed her well-appointed house to the city of Amsterdam in 1895, along with her late husband Abraham’s impressive art collection, consisting of antique furniture, silver, ceramics, sculptures, paintings and photos.

Courtyard

The impressive ballroom in Louis XVI style, dining room, separate drawing rooms for the lord and lady of the manor, conservatory and the hallway on the piano nobile show how the wealthy Willet couple lived. The kitchen and scullery in the basement give a glimpse of their staff’s everyday lives. The house also has a beautiful courtyard. This green oasis in the center of Amsterdam was designed in 18th-century French style, with historical species of trees and plants.

Solo exhibition by Maaike Schoorel

From 7 May 2022, the museum is holding a solo exhibition by the artist Maaike Schoorel (1973). Schoorel has produced ten new paintings and a room-sized installation, where she presents her associative research in photos, collages and special discoveries from the collection. Her work focuses mainly on Louisa Willet-Holthuysen. This is the first in a series of presentations of the collection and Willet-Holthuysen house in relation to other – contemporary – collections.
