Sacred lotus     In the Chinese Herb Garden, the sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera 'Pekinensis Rubra') grows and blooms.     Cunie Sleijpen

Aquatic plants

The sacred lotus is not related to the water lily, although the flowers are similar, and both are aquatic plants. This species is from Asia but had been introduced to Egypt more than 2,500 years ago. The fragrant flowers are set amid long-stemmed, shield-shaped leaves. The fruit is a typical box fruit, the seeds of which are used in traditional Chinese medicine.
