Seaside culture
Seaside towns seem to be magnets for artists. In Domburg, this effect was enhanced by the natural beauty of the surroundings, the special light by the sea and its reflection, which can be seen even at Walcheren. The capricious dune landscape, the ever-changing North Sea and the ancient forests around the town have inspired many poets, composers, writers, and most of all, painters. Around 1900, when artist Jan Toorop (1858-1928) first arrived in Domburg, the local population was already familiar with a bathing season and an established seaside culture. The collection includes works by Jan Toorop and reproductions of paintings by Piet Mondrian.
